At a Glance

Prairie Sage is a hardy, aromatic perennial native to much of North America. Its slender, silver-gray leaves and upright flowering stems give it a distinctive appearance, while its earthy, herbal fragrance makes it a memorable addition to the landscape. For generations, Indigenous peoples have drawn upon this plant for medicinal, practical, and ceremonial purposes, with traditions varying among communities. At Heart of Rock Farm, Prairie Sage is appreciated as a fragrant botanical with a rich history and a natural beauty that lends itself to dried bundles. It is commonly associated with Medicinal, Metaphysical/ Spiritual, Cosmetic, and Artistic/Crafting uses.

Not to be confused with Garden Sage (Salvia officinalis), the familiar culinary herb, nor traditional White Sage (Salvia apiana). Prairie Sage (Artemisia ludoviciana) belongs to an entirely different plant family and has its own distinctive aroma, appearance, and traditional uses.
